How its made

These are one of a kind, re-erected Ghanaian hand carved ebony wood combs with a rich brass overlay. These beautiful made to order pieces are forged by local Ghanaian artisans at our Kumasi workshop using a mixture of wood work & the lost wax casting process.

Note: Due to the handmade nature of this item, each piece is unique, one of the same & any variations are considered part of the beauty of the design.

These are beautiful items for interior decor wall or center table displays alongside being functionally used.

Symbol Meaning

  • Asesedwa: A multi-proverbial message speaking to the nature of the stool. When carried out at festivals one bares it on his neck & head but is supported by two other people. Even though great responsibility may be assigned to one person. To see success is when that person is helped by others. Greatness doesn't come by one person's effort, it takes a village.

  • Nteaase: The making of FUFU, a traditional Akan dish, takes two to do. One lifts up the cane to pound the cassava, the other flips and molds it into a ready to eat ball. Teamwork is needed if everyone wants to eat.

  • Nkyinkyim: Proverbial as the Akans are, this piece speaks to the ups & downs of life and how they are so interconnected. Both aspects are needed in order to appreciate and respect the other. This particular piece is dual sided, with a different facial expression on both sides.

Once your order is complete, we ship worldwide for free from Ghana using DHL. Shipping with DHL which normally takes 3 -5 Business days.

Since the fourteenth century, Akan rulers have used elaborate displays of royal regalia (Agyapdie) to express their power and wealth, as well as to shield themselves from harm. We have erected this royal regalia in modern fashion while maintaining the style and techniques used to produce them that are centuries old.

We are Ghanaians and a black owned small business in love with our culture with a mission to share a piece of our heritage with the rest of the world.

  • Investing in the health and economy of the communities that are affected by precious metals, gemstone mining, and manufacturing in particular Ghana.
  • DIRECTLY supporting a local artisan and manufacturing economy.
  • Investing in the growth of a sustainable jewelry industry.

Why The Akan Index?

Handmade in Ghana

Authenticity is everything. We felt that it would not pay homage to our rich culture to place the production of our artifacts in the hands of others. Therefore we employ local smiths and artisans here in Ghana who understand the cultural relevance of our products to design and produce our pieces.

Responsible Labor

We've taken an oath to support healthy, happy & financially beneficial working conditions. We directly employ the original smiths of our ancient jewelery with fair wages and give tribute to the royals who have adorned them for generations. No part of our supply chain is left out, and we're always working to do better.

Cultural Education

Before you wear our pieces, we strive for you to know the history and significance of what you wear and of the people who craft them. It's not just a trendy fashion statement, it's a historical piece that connects us to a lineage of black culture going back thousands of years.
